Love and Light Devotional Series Day 1

It Starts with a Spark

Damp, quenched wicks cannot light. It takes a dry thread or filament to catch the flame of a lit match. In the same way, our spirits ignite with immediate heat and light that starts from supernatural spiritual re-birth into eternity.

God’s Spirit is an all-consuming fire (Hebrews 12) and we are warned not to quench that fire (1 Thessalonians 5:19). The tongues of flickering light that appeared on the day of Pentecost represented that flame of God that burns within each of His children born to new life upon their salvation in Christ.

The flame gave forth heat generated from the source of eternal energy and power in Jesus’s Spirit. He is the Light of the World who glows brightly from His followers catching that flame. When Jesus’s touch and Spirit birth a new creature into His Kingdom, the spark that started on the day of Pentecost catches onto that new believer’s heart, mind, and soul. Their regenerated spirit comes alive, and His Spirit takes residence inside. The key to tending that flame is maintaining and growing the fire like any natural fire: with good fuel and oxygen flow.

God’s Word, the Bible is with what we fuel the flame of our faith. The oxygen flow is a fanning of the Holy Spirit stirring up inside us, communing with us, listening to His voice. The works that transpire producing the fruit of the Spirit are the result of the flame’s growth and glow, all shining into the world’s ever-darkening night.

Verses to Spark Your Heart:

“Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’” John 8:12
You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house.” Matthew 5:14-15
When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them.” Acts 2:1-3

Love in Action:

Ask the Lord to fan your faith into greater flame with His Spirit and Word today so that your light may shine as bright as possible and Father God may be glorified.
