Deep Calls To Deep: A Poem

Context

As I was praying over our nation’s epidemic of suicide rates growing and pandemic of abortions, I remembered the words of Psalm 42:7, “Deep calls to deep at the roar of your waterfalls; all your breakers and your waves have gone over me.” I penned this poem so to encourage fellow brothers and sisters in Christ to come awake to and alert to the state of our American society, as it is so easy to become distracted by the temporary, fleeting discourses on politics and bad news. As I believe it is a fight to stay on fire for our Lord Jesus, maybe these words will ring true in those who also acknowledge we must awaken from being spiritually lukewarm to counter the schemes of the enemy who is daily working to steal, kill and destroy all life.

Every life is in God’s hands,

He gives and take away.

When man’s light is dimmed,

He is no doubt led astray.

What has the church done wrong?

Where have we failed God’s voice,

To see such an epidemic,

A bondage – not a choice?

The choice to live or die,

Should never belong to man,

With the Sovereignty of God,

There has to be a plan!

All these lives are snuffed out,

God’s grace, an afterthought.

This is not the life God offers

From the ransom His Son bought.

Where has the church gone wrong?

When did we fall asleep?

Isn’t there a solution only we have?

For God’s sake – deep calls to deep!

A mystery unfolds these days,

For such a time as this –

It’s time to waken from our slumber

It’s time to end death’s wish.

Life has begun to look dispensable,

To the majority, wrong looks right,

And good seems reprehensible,

The tide has turned, day’s now night.

To win those for Jesus and to live fully alive,

We have the Answer to the suicides,

We must speak out and shine our light.

We have the Answer to the genocides.

The Answer to the changing tides,

A call that’s deeper than our enemy’s cries.

That scoundrel lurks and draws away,

The possibility of life’s new Day.

As he preys on the young,

The weak-minded and lost,

Isn’t enough, enough?

Didn’t Christ pay the ultimate cost?

We can’t just sit around and pray,

We must counteract, counter-think and counter-say,

Time to awake, Church – answer the call!

It’s now or never, and it affects us all.

The choice to live or die,

Should never be man’s to decide,

Our Answer has given his own lifeblood,

So we don’t have to, and yet we hide.

This self-sabotage,

This tranquil poison of lies,

A web of deceit,

A cunning guise.

Man calls it choice,

God wants us to fight,

To raise our voice,

And cry into the night.

The same who He died for,

To become their savior,

Are enslaved to the darkness,

Each and every lost neighbor.

And the sheep that we are,

Make no way for the blind,

We whom God saved,

Must be out of our mind.

Instead of us dreaming

Of being light to the dark,

Let’s shake off the slumber,

Make loving bravely our mark.

We wonder in vain,

Who will end up on our side.

Our precious time is His after all,

His saving power not ours to decide.

We know we have the Answer,

So if we wake from our spiritual sleep,

Then we may heed the call,

For deep calls to deep.
