No One’s Perfect and That’s OK

God uses people with their gifts and flaws. Have you messed up? Join the club. It’s only fitting that we share in the mission and ministry of a God whose best leaders fall short. He can still use someone who is willing to honor Him.

Looking at God’s Examples

The hall of faith heroes were not perfect. Our examples of the faith had made some pretty major mistakes and should have been rejected forever at times. But God didn’t give up on them or their stories.

Just look at a few chapters of Genesis. The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob?

  • He associates His reputation with a guy who deceives others, telling them his wife is his sister (Abraham)
  • He associates Himself with men that will sleep with their (multiple) wives and wives’ maids (Abraham and Jacob)
  • He associates Himself with men that deceive and murder (Jacob’s sons among whom Jesus’s lineage is traced)
  • He associates Himself with men who clearly have issues with their marriage (Isaac and Rebekah contending for their favorite sons).

Reviewing these facts from just a few chapters of Genesis tells me that even though God’s chosen can mess up big time, and that doesn’t keep God from using them and their stories for His glory.

He Can Use You Too

If you’re concerned that your past and perhaps your present, or even your future will keep you from God using your life to change others, think again.

Let me be clear: this is not a warrant to willingly rebel and sin outright.

However, something to keep in mind when we fall to temptations is that “The godly may trip seven times, but they will get up again. But one disaster is enough to overthrow the wicked.” (Proverbs 24:16)

God redeems us. When we recognize what we’ve done has separated our souls from communion with God, we need to turn back to Him to ask for forgiveness. We humble ourselves and repent. This is righteousness. God faithfully forgives and can then use us.

So, maybe you had an affair. Maybe you murdered someone. Maybe you had those thoughts.

No one’s perfect and that’s okay.

Take comfort that God sees it all, and is waiting for you with arms wide open. The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob is still alive, continuing to forgive and redeem those who make the wrong choices with the wrong intentions.

After all, He is the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

From Scripture

“The godly may trip seven times, but they will get up again. But one disaster is enough to overthrow the wicked.” Proverbs 24:16 (NLT)

“As the Scriptures say, “No one is righteous— not even one. Abraham was, humanly speaking, the founder of our Jewish nation. What did he discover about being made right with God? If his good deeds had made him acceptable to God, he would have had something to boast about. But that was not God’s way.” Romans 3:10 – Romans 4:2 (NLT)

Today’s Prayer

God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob: See me. Choose me. I am sorry for the sins and trespasses I’ve committed against you (specifically: ….). Please erase them and forgive me. Redeem my life story and give me a renewed vision to serve You faithfully out of love and devotion to You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
