BipolarBrave Awards Exclusive Interview: Dr. Corine Williams

This is one of a series of BipolarBrave Awards exclusive interview posts for May, celebrating those raising awareness for mental health. The series will showcase those who won or placed in the annual BipolarBrave Mental Health and Faith Awards I host through the BipolarBrave blog.

Dr. Corine Williams’ ministry, Therapy for Christians, placed second in the blog category in the BipolarBrave awards this year.  On top of that, TherapyforChristians.com placed second in the organization category! I’ve run in some of the same circles as Dr. Williams like online advocacy groups for Christian thought leaders in the faith and mental health movement.

Dr. Corine Williams completed her doctorate in clinical psychology at Saint Louis University, an internship at the Virginia Treatment Center for Children, and post-doctoral training at the Center for Child and Family Traumatic Stress (formerly Kennedy Krieger Institute Family Center). Since becoming a psychologist, Dr. Williams has worked with adults on various specialty areas, including but not limited to depression, anxiety, relationship issues, life adjustments, trauma, goal planning, life transitions, relationships, stress management, and medical stress. She believes in a collaborative relationship with her patients, partnering with them to help understand their current life situation, emotions, and feelings. Her goal in treatment is to help clients learn the skills needed to work toward living the life they envision for themselves.

Dr. Williams is licensed in Maryland, New Jersey, and New York. She is the founder of www.therapyforchristians.com, a website dedicated to increasing mental health awareness in the Christian community. She is also the author of several books, including It is Well: A Guided Christian Journal, which contains 70 activities to help individuals make peace with their past, take control of their emotions, and live a life that honors God. More information about her can be found at https://www.therapyforchristians.com/united-states/new-jersey/ewing/corine-williams  or by visiting her Amazon profile. In her spare time, she enjoys writing and gardening.

Dr. Williams graciously let me interview her for the BipolarBrave blog to speak to her accomplishments and efforts in the faith and mental health movement. I’m grateful for her and the work she has faithfully followed the Lord in over the years.

Corine Williams bipolarbrave awards interview 2024 postWhy did you start your ministry?

I started Therapy for Christians because I wanted to increase mental health awareness within the Christian community. As both a provider and user of mental health services, I witnessed the unhelpful ways Christians often deal with mental health issues. There was a significant lack of understanding about effective treatments, and many believed that mental illness was solely due to “the devil” or “sin.” My goal is to provide biblically-based information and resources to address these misconceptions and promote both mental well-being and spiritual growth.

In a few sentences, share your ministry’s measurable achievements.

Our ministry has made significant progress by creating a comprehensive database that helps individuals find Christian mental health providers who share their worldview. We have also established a platform that allows mental health professionals to market their services effectively. Our resources have aided many Christians in finding appropriate mental health support and have increased awareness about mental health issues within the community. Most weeks of the year, we publish mental health-related content that is read by people all over the globe. In 2021, we published an adult mental health journal, It Is Well: A Christian Guided Journal: 10 Weeks to Making Peace with Your Past, Taking Control of Your Emotions, and Living a Life that Honors God.

What are your future plans for your ministry? Anything noteworthy to give us a heads-up about?
